Embrace the Equation

Reduce calories. Do an Internet search using the phrase “reduce 100 calories.” Visit four to six web sites to research various ideas for how to reduce 100 calories from your daily food plan. For example: suggestions at www.prevention.com/100calories/ include ordering a side salad instead of fries with fast food, choosing Canadian bacon instead of sausage, substituting half the oil in a recipe with applesauce when baking. Use the worksheet later in this session to write down 10 ideas you’d like to try. Place checkmarks next to two or three of the ideas you will try this week.

Bonus challenge: Make an “Eat This, Not That!” list for your snacks.* Using the worksheet later in this session, list four to six snacks you once ate that are no longer on your food plan or that you must limit. For example: a candy bar, Oreos, potato chips. Then identify a healthy option for that snack that you could eat instead. Use the Internet or the nutrition facts on food packaging to identify the calories for both options and the calories you’ll save by choosing the healthy option.
